Intermittent Fasting: Is it Just a Fad?

If you’ve been paying attention to fad diets, then you’ve likely heard of fasting, or “intermittent fasting,” which many health experts seem to split stances on the issue. Some believe it’s just a fad while others believe that there are major health and wellness benefits to be experienced from intermittent fasting.

Types of Fasting

Let’s first define intermittent fasting. There are a few different ways to pull it off, including the 5:2 Fast Diet, which entails fasting for 2 days and eating normally for the rest of the week. One could also take the 1:1 approach by alternating between unrestricted eating and fasting days.

The more manageable, reasonable approach would be the 8:16 method, which essentially entails skipping either breakfast or dinner (which, let’s be honest, many of us do anyway). In the end, this approach has you eating for 8 hours every day and fasting for 16.

Health Benefits of Intermittent Fasting

Medical professionals and health gurus alike applaud intermittent fasting for its health benefits. Dr. Michael Mosley asserts in his books that this diet can help patients not only lose weight, but improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and also reduce risk for diabetes. Dr. Valter Longo conducted a study that suggested this type of diet acted as a “reboot” for the immune system as well, which cleared out aged and damaged immune cells with regenerated cells.

A detoxification process is also believed to occur, as toxins stored in the body’s fat get dissolved and flushed from the body. After building an intermittent fasting practice, patients also experience higher levels of endorphins or “feel-good” hormones, which can have an impact on overall well-being.
